an effective approach to pain relief 925.639.1734

Welcome to the Body Clinic

The Body Clinic specializes in using Bowenwork™ to address a wide variety of conditions. Also known as Bowen Therapy or the Bowen Technique, it works by stimulating the body’s healing systems, allowing you to return to your natural state of balance and health. Bowenwork is appropriate for all ages and stages of health. Many of our clients report remarkable results after just one session and most report complete relief by the end of the treatment period.

Our clients include high-level athletes, children, seniors and many others looking to improve their work or sports performance or gain relief from pain or discomfort. “I want to thank you for your treatment. I have no pain in my hip and hardly any pain at all down the side of my leg. Also, my cramps have gone away. I feel super. Again, thanks from the bottom of my heart.”

About Bowenwork

Bowenwork affects the autonomic nervous system—responsible for stress reactions such as the "fight or flight" response—as well as the recovery responses of the body. By helping reduce the stress-oriented dominance of the sympathetic part of the system, muscle tension decreases, nerve hypersensitivity is reduced and the feedback loops that control acute pain in the body are interrupted. At the same time, the parasympathetic portion is restored, increasing blood and lymph flow, feeding starved tissue, reducing inflammation, and allowing the healing process to accelerate.

Spasm and inflammation, healthy responses immediately after an injury, too often linger and become a problem in themselves. Bowenwork can directly relieve these symptoms by reducing the "fight or flight" muscle contraction and increasing blood and lymph flow.  While there are often immediate positive results, they are just as likely to unfold for up to a week. Although long-term patterns of dysfunction may take time and repetition to be replaced with new, healthy patterns, Bowenwork can usually restore patterns of normal function within 3-8 sessions.

Bowenwork, which can be done anywhere—on the sports field, in a hospital room, at the site of an accident, on an airplane or train—is completely safe and appropriate for everyone from newborns to the elderly and frail. Highly trained athletes and pregnant women benefit equally, each according to need. Although there are circumstances in which a specific series of moves is contraindicated, there are no contraindications for a Bowenwork session, as the body as a whole will still benefit.

For just one example of an application of Bowenwork, watch this video from Equitopia Rider Wellness Day, held May 2016.

“I was experiencing such severe pain in my legs from a herniated disc that I could no longer walk up the stairs in our home. After several appointments with Jaime, my pain level improved greatly where I was once again mobile, could freely walk up the stairs, and basically got my life back. What really surprised me was the dropping of my high blood pressure to below normal readings. Jaime is a pleasure to have as a therapist. She is a true professional in her field, easy to communicate with, and prompt with her appointments.”

What to expect

Bowenwork is an effective style of bodywork that addresses the body in a subtle way to activate its own healing mechanisms.

When you arrive for your first appointment you will be asked to complete paperwork and we will have a short interview about your reason for visiting.  You will then lie, fully clothed, face-down on a comfortable table.  Your practitioner will perform a series of moves over your muscles, tendons or nerves, then leave the room for at least two minutes to allow your body time to process the movements.  This process is repeated until the session is completed.  You may feel very relaxed and fall asleep during the session. Allow 90 minutes for your first session and an hour for each following appointment.

Please arrive for your appointment wearing loose fitting, comfortable clothes (avoid denim) as all the work will be performed over your clothing.  Be sure to drink ample water prior to your appointment so you are well hydrated.

Generally, 5–8 sessions, one week apart, will be sufficient to address most concerns. Some conditions will need more sessions, and some clients choose to receive regular "tune ups" or maintenance sessions to keep them feeling great.

About The Body Clinic

Jaime Cruz, certified by the Bowenwork Academy in 2012, owns and operates The Body Clinic.

Like so many of her clients and colleagues, she has sciatica to thank for her discovery of Bowenwork.  After years of trying to ignore nagging lower-back pain that continued all the way down her leg, a trusted friend and Bowenwork practitioner suggested she give it a try.  After only one session the pain was gone.  When, several years later, she was experiencing a new pain in her elbow, she remembered the treatment its amazing results; it was then she realized that Bowen could be more to her than a tool to help her body be its best.

“Before discovering Bowenwork as a career I felt unfulfilled in my work.  I worked hard at my office job to feel a sense of satisfaction at a job well done, and squeezed in as much volunteer time as i could to help my community.  But it still didn’t seem like enough.  Then the same friend who suggested I try Bowenwork for my sciatica casually mentioned it as a career.  That’s when it clicked for me—I had finally found a way that I could both help the people around me and feel the satisfaction of a job well done.  Every time I see relief on a client’s face or hear reports of them being freed from pain, I am thankful that I found this path.”
